HAIR LOSS – WOMEN

3 STAGES OF HAIR

ANAGEN -This stage is the growing phase and lasts for 2 – 6 years

CATALAN – Known as the intermediate phase and lasts for 1 – 2 weeks

TELOGEN – This is the rest and fall out phase. It last for 5 – 6 weeks

If your hair remains in the telogen phase for too long or too much hair is lost during this phase, it is known as Telogen Effluvium (excessive shedding). Without the correct nutrients & vitamins, shedding will continue and will result in loss of hair density. Leaving your hair thinner, weaker & more fragile as each year goes by.

It is far easier to STOP excessive shedding, than it is to regrow lost hair.

WHAT TYPE OF HAIR LOSS ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM?

Androgenetic Alopecia – Hereditary hair loss, shedding without regeneration

Telogen Effluvium – Excessive shedding caused by menopause, stress, medical, child birth

Alopecia – Areata, Totalis, Universalis – shedding in circular sections. Normally starting behind the ears and nape of the neck.

Medical Hair Loss – Caused by medication such as Blood thinners ie Warfarin, Thyroid medication, anaesthetic/operations etc

There are several reasons why women lose their hair. The two most common reasons are Oestrogen dominance, which allows women to suffer the same pattern as male balding. The second reason is Telogen effluvium (TE), an excessive amount of shedding caused by, illness, child birth, puberty, menopause, medical procedures, weight loss, thyroid and iron deficiencies the contraceptive pill, bladder and yeast infection etc.

If you are suffering from any of the above,  it is advisable that women take action to reverse the above conditions and protect their hair for the future.

DAILY drying and chemical procedures also play a role in the deterioration of a women’s hair. Daily treatments as well as hair colouring and straitening can eventually compromise hair growth, appearance and density.

AGEING hair loss is also greatly ignored by women. Every day we apply cream to our skin to keep the elasticity and youthful appearance but we do very little for our hair. As we age, our hair sac stops absorbing the amount of nutrients required to keep the hair smooth and thick. This is why our hair looks frizzy and unruly as we get older. Just as our skin derteriates, so does our hair.

WHY DO WOMEN LOSE THEIR HAIR?

Hair loss is a normal part of the ageing process. Androgenetic Alopecia accounts for 95% of all hair loss. It often runs in families and affects some people more than others.

Women rarely go entirely bald like men, however hair loss is spread out evenly over the entire scalp.

Hormones play the dominant role when talking about Androgenetic Alopecia. The hormone, Oestrogen, when higher than progesterone is converted to testosterone. Testosterone is then converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) with the aid of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase.

DHT shrinks hair follicles causing the membranes in the scalp to thicken, become inelastic and restrict blood flow. This causes the hair follicles to atrophy. As a result when a hair falls out it is not replaced.

While Androgenetic Alopecia is the number one reason why individuals experience hair loss, it is not the only one.

Other reasons include:

OESTROGEN DOMINANCE

Woman with Oestrogen dominance that are suffering from hair loss are known to be suffering “MALE” PATTERN BALDNESS (FMPB).  Male pattern baldness in woman often affects Indian and Asian females as well as young girls who are coming into puberty.  Hormones play the dominant role when talking about hair loss.

Oestrogen dominance is a large factor in FMPB (male pattern baldness in woman).  Oestrogen dominance can start early in a woman’s menstrual cycle. Young woman who suffer from this are often given the birth control pill to help regulate the frequency and severity of their periods. Early signs of hair loss are often linked to hormonal imbalance.

Some women develop Oestrogen dominance much later in life.  Known reason for suffering from Oestrogen dominance is low progesterone levels which is caused when woman no longer ovulate.  After menopause, Progesterone decreases by 100% from its original baseline, while Oestrogen production only decreases by 40%. The drop in progesterone leads to the imbalance in the system and causes an increase in Oestrogen activity.

New research shows that most females suffering from symptoms of PMS and menopause discomfort are suffering from low progesterone levels.

Symptoms that are associated with Oestrogen dominance are:

Infertility
Breast tenderness
Cold hands and feet
Breast cancer
Hair loss
Irregular menstrual periods
PMSBloating
Weight gain
Migraines
Depression
Decreased sex drive
Fibroids
Ovarian Cysts
Early puberty
Slow metabolism

There are even more symptoms linked to Oestrogen dominance. This can be a prevailing factor in how you look, feel and act.

OTHER REASONS INCLUDE

    • MEDICAL TREATMENT

Certain medications such as blood thinners, gout medication, birth control pills and too much Vitamin A can cause abnormal hair loss. After chemo therapy, hair often grows back differently.

    • DISEASE/ILLNESS

Emotional stress, pregnancy or surgery can also cause our hair to fall out. Suffering a stroke or other various medical conditions changes the hair structure not only from the illness but from the medication taken during recovery.

    • DIET

Crash dieting and under nourishment is a common cause of hair loss and lustre.

    • NUTRITION

Lack of important vitamins and micro nutrients or an excess of Vitamin A can not only cause hair to fall out but disable new follicles from growing.

    • MECHANICAL

Regular use of curling irons, straightening irons or excessive blow drying play a major role in hair breakage and thinning.

    • CHEMICAL

Repetitive colouring, foiling and perming with aggressive ammonia based products can break the structure of the hair and damage the cells on the scalp.

TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM

Telogen Effluvium arises quite suddenly. Usually from: Illness (fever related), surgical operations, accidents, childbirth, shock, weight loss, certain medications, contraceptive pill, iron deficiencies, thyroid conditions and hysterectomies etc.

The symptoms of Telogen Effluvium are a larger than normal shedding of hair all over the head at one time. This is due to the disturbance of hair growth cycles of the hair. There are 3 phases of hair growth.

1. Anagen (growth phase) 85% of hair is in the Anagen phase
2. Catogen (releasing phase) lasting 2 – 4 weeks
3. Telogen (resting phase) 15% of hair is in Telogen phase

A hair follicle usually grows for up to 4- 7 years and then rests for approximately 4 months before a new hair starts to form and push the resting hair (attached to the bulb) out. Once the old hair is released the cycle is complete. The new hair is exposed and remains on your head for 4 – 7 yrs. If there is a shock to the system as many as 70% of the Anagen hairs can be forced into the Telogen phase thus reversing the ratio.

The hair is released simultaneously causing a larger than normal amount of shedding. This makes the hair much thinner and as this phenomenon continues the existing hair becomes visually unattractive and limp. Obviously it is less stressful if you have thick hair but in general this large shedding can cause anxiety which results in even more hair loss. Normally new hair grows back in 3 – 4 months of the shedding and in time the hair starts to thicken. However depending on age and other medical factors, the hair may never really be fully restored to its former thickness. Telogen Effluvium does not cause complete baldness, although it may unmask a genetic tendency to female pattern balding. (Thinning of the hair on top of the head). In most cases Telogen Effluvium is not a permanent condition and remedies itself to a degree. However it can reoccur through a person’s life several times.

LICHEN PLANUS

Lichen Planus (often pronounced “licken”Planus) is a severe form of hair loss, unlike any other condition, Lichen Planus scars the skin on the head. Once skin is scarred nothing will grow through the scarring. Depending on how severe and how long a person has had the condition dictates whether or not they can hope to remedy it.Patients with a cutaneous eruption (eruptions on the skin) may also have individual lesions arising out of the hair follicle. The areas surrounding the follicle are normally purple in colour and have scaly pruritic papules (hives like rash) on the scalp. LP is apparently a self limiting disease and resolves itself with 8-12 months. However there are cases of patients having the condition for longer and then unfortunately the area can become scarred. It is important to treat LP as soon as possible.

HOW DOES DHT & A HORMONAL IMBALANCE AFFECT WOMEN?

DHT, oestrogen, thyroid etc causes the hair follicle to stop absorbing nutrients needed for a healthy hair. Due to this the follicle is released from the hair shaft before it has completed the Anagen cycle (the growing phase 2 – 7 yrs). The follicle then becomes inactive. Some follicles will gradually die but most will simply shrink producing weaker thinner hair. A new hair is unable to grow and push through as it is being deprived of nutrients. The cycle is repeated and as women age the more unbalanced our systems become and process is multiplied. This is how we go bald. Follicles do not die but become inactive.

HOW MUCH HAIR WILL I REGAIN?

We cannot predict how the product will work for each individual and can only go on results gathered from our existing clients. It does depend on medical considerations and how long your have been losing hair for. In one case study (refer to Michelle on the photo page) the client has regained approximately 40% regeneration within 13 months.

Women that have suffered hair loss for several years will find that they would need to be on the supplement for at least 6 months – 1 year before they can physically see the thickness of their hair changing. It is not uncommon to lose a bit more hair before the product is able to calm the inflammation.

It is important to remember that Arcon Tisane is a prevention supplement and that you are taking it to prevent any further hair loss.

HOW LONG UNTIL I SEE RESULTS?

Results vary with individual conditions. Improvements can be noticed within 3 – 4 months. However it is important to realise that it takes time for a supplement to be absorbed by the body. Although a change in the existing hair is noticeable within 4 months it is not uncommon for results to take up to 8 months.
